RSPB Fowlmere is a tranquil nature reserve tucked between Fowlmere and Melbourn in Cambridgeshire, covering around 40 hectares of wetlands, reedbeds and grassland.
Once worked as watercress beds, the site has been transformed into a rich patchwork of habitats fed by natural chalk springs, with the clear waters of the River Shep, a chalk stream, running through it. Today, visitors can follow a roughly 3‑kilometre trail, including accessible boardwalks and hides, offering peaceful views over pools and reeds that are alive with birdlife.
A visit offers the chance to slow down and immerse yourself in a “wildlife oasis set within farmland,” where reedbeds rustle and wildlife reveals itself at every turn. Birdwatchers can look out for kingfishers flashing along the water, as well as water rails, reed warblers and, in winter, gatherings of buntings. The reserve isn’t just for birds, otters, water voles and dragonflies also thrive here, making it an enjoyable destination year‑round. With level paths it’s an easy and rewarding place for a gentle walk, whether you’re hoping to spot rare species or simply enjoy the calm of nature.
